Director Alister Grierson teams with screenwriter John Lonie for this Aussie war drama exploring the fate of a missing patrol of Australian soldiers in World War II-era New Guinea. As Japanese troops continue their advance towards Port Moresby with an eye on invading Australia next, the task of defending the treacherous Kokoda Trail is left to uninitiated volunteers (derisively known as "chocos") due to the fact that the big guns are on deployment elsewhere. When the ramshackle platoon receives confirmation of the impending assault and their supply lines are cut off without warning, mud-caked "choco" Jack Scholt (Jack Finsterer), his brother Max (Simon Stone), die-hard Darko (Travis McMahon), and skittish Johnno (Tom Budge) all prepare for the worst. Their ranks fast thinning thanks to the deadly accurate sharp shooting of an unseen enemy, the hardened Aussie soldiers do their best to protect the homeland or die trying. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

When Daphne (Jacqueline McKenzie), a taxidermist with a penchant for going through other peoples' personal belongings, agrees to allow Nick (Jack Finsterer) to take up residence in her home, she didn't realize he shared the same habit. Sure enough, the two quickly root through each other's things and begin to unearth highly incriminating diaries and erotic literature, among other things. Nick, it seems, is a complicated individual -- not only does he have a disturbing tendency toward self-mutilation, but he is haunted by the voice of his dead mother. This doesn't deter Daphne, however, and the odd couple show signs of falling in love, to the dismay of a fellow boarder (Simon Burke) who has been trying to scam Daphne into believing he can contact her dead father. Preservation was directed by Sofya Gollan. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Sex and the singles scene is a much explored and exploited subject in cinema, particularly in the 1990's. Strange Fits of Passion tries to avoid clichés in narrating a young woman's desperate crusade to lose her virginity. The result is a bittersweet fable in which the protagonist takes the viewer along on her journey through hilarious sexual and social misadventures as she struggles to discover the meaning of sex, love, and desire in a world which is post-modern and post-everything. The first film of actress and stage director Elise McCredie, Strange Fits of Passion was chosen for the International Critics' Week at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide
